Teach in Prison

SOCIAL - EDUCATION - ACTIVISM

We are a prison abolitionist student-run collective. Our DeCal involves specific topics surrounding carceral histories and apparatuses. The other component involves Cal students assisting with education programs inside of San Quentin. We are a student -run collective working towards building knowledge, connecting to community, and being active in abolition/ care work. The organization consists of two main components: once a week tutors assist students inside the prison, and once a week they attend the on-campus class where they learn about the current issues affecting the California prison system. Students will learn best tutoring practices and the current state of mass incarceration and the prison industrial complex. Additionally, students study prominent issues around rehabilitation and reentry of formerly incarcerated populations. Specific issues may include the history of incarceration in the state of California and the intersections of carcerality with settler colonialism, disability, gender, queerness, race, poverty, houselessness, and more.
