Sports Analytics Group at Berkeley

The Sports Analytics Group at Berkeley educates and prepares members for careers in the field of sports analytics and to pursue sports-related research through participation in one of three divisions: Projects, Data Journalism, and Business. Analytics and data science are taking over every part of the billion-dollar sports world. Major sports teams, agencies, and media outlets alike have begun revolutionizing their decision-making strategies across all parts of the industry - not just in how the game is played and how teams are built, but also now touching on everything from biomechanics to brand health. The Sports Analytics Group at Berkeley aims to give members learning and practical experience doing sports analytics work wherever it interests them within our three divisions: Projects, Business, and Data Journalism. The Projects division works on sports strategy consulting projects for professional and collegiate sports organizations, teams, and agencies. Whether its predicting free agent contracts or visualizing baseball player swings, SAGB Projects continues to explore ways to revolutionize sports through data. The Business division works with the business departments of professional sports organizations from around the country - helping teams with a variety of operational tasks such as ticketing, marketing, and overall brand development. Working with teams such as the Red Sox and Clippers, SAGB Business has grown extensively over the past few years in size and scope, and has continuously given members the opportunity to grow and experience what it is really like in the business side of professional sports. The Data Journalism division discusses trending topics in the sports world using evidence backed by analytics and statistics.
