National Organization of Minority Architects Students
ENGINEERING - SOCIAL - ADVOCACY
We are dedicated to giving a platform for minority architects and students to advance their place in the architectural industry, fight social and environmental injustices, and bring unity to a diverse body through shared visions and goals.
What is NOMAS? NOMA stands for the National Organization of Minority Architects, an organization dedicated to giving a platform for minority architects to advance their place in the architectural industry, fight social and environmental injustices (not necessarily limited to architecture), and bring unity to a diverse body through shared visions and goals. NOMAS is the NOMA representative for Student university chapters.

Why does Berkeley need NOMAS? And why now? Berkeley is famous for its student involvement with the social discourse and the individual unlearning processes of biases and stereotypes. However, the Architecture students of the CED represent a passionate, yet frustrated student body, regarding the diversity of architects studied, redundancy and hypocrisy in the curriculum, and the treatment of peers in the LGBTQ+ community. The CED has one of the most diverse architecture student bodies nationally; however, that statistic is not an excuse for an unsatisfactory student experience, academically and socially. Today, at the height of the BLM Movement, is a perfect opportunity for students and faculty to raise a NOMAS Chapter and foster productive dialogue for the benefit of the student experience.
