Jugger at Berkeley
SPORT
Jugger is an internationally played field sport that combines aspects of fencing, rugby, and capture the flag. Our group exists to bring the sport to the Berkeley community through playing on campus. All are welcome!
Imagine yourself as part of a post-apocalyptic battle team. The sun beating down on you, catching and glinting off your weapon. The ground soft beneath your feet. Your enemies across the field beginning to look worn down, their eyes betraying fear....Now you can be. ;) There is a sport, popular in Germany, called "Jugger" based on a post-apocalyptic movie from Australia (incidentally, this movie was directed by a Cal grad! he also wrote the screenplays for Blade Runner and Twelve Monkeys). It has evolved somewhat from its depiction in the movie, with foam-padded weaponry and t-shirts replacing steel and armor. After a few years of learning about the game, we finally agreed that we should make a set of pompfen to play. Now we're done, and you can join the Jugger at Berkeley formerly known as Juggers of the Seven Regents here on campus! We'll be playing weekly on memorial glade; weather, seasons, field schedules, and light permitting.
We can't promise that you might not get bruises from playing (that's a legally-binding statement, right?), but we can promise that we have made the weapons as safe as we can according to the game's Berlin-style rules. Before you come you might want to watch a quick primer on how the game works. There are also many videos of real jugger games that aren't stylized to show you what to expect.
