Gravity Group Investment Club at Berkeley
BUSINESS - TECHNOLOGY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Investment clubs on campus are often demanding on time and resources. This club seeks to tackle the issue and create a community of investors/traders of all experience levels. We don't have an application process, you could join or leave anytime!
When have you heard of stocks? In a family meeting where your parents talked about how Uncle Bob lost his entire life savings overnight in options? From your friend who said the market is rigged against you? While investing seem incredibly daunting, just like performing surgeries or building circuits, it's easy if you know what you are doing.
The stock market is very accessible to everyone and even to teenagers. This accessibility inevitably leads to a mountain of "investors" who quote Warren Buffet out of context to justify the massively idiotic trade they are executing with their Grandma's social security payout. Like any job that pays a salary, the stock market requires a painful learning process that could be shortened dramatically through the guidance of our senior members. Our senior members lost money in egregiously overvalued hype stocks so you don't have to; you can cut the "painful lesson" part and jump right into the "making money" part.
Statistically, the S&P 500 returns 9% over long periods of time. Many ETFs that track the S&P 500 pay a dividend of 2%. While this return is fantastic, the S&P 500 includes the top 500 largest publicly traded companies. This method could be more efficient because there are both big winners and losers in the 500 companies chosen, creating plenty of drag. Gravity Group's club members believe that through financial education and experience, we could pick the winners and beat the 9% return through a streamlined investment process.
As a community, we guide each other using our collective expertise. Even though losing money is inevitable, our members will eventually learn the process and build a secure financial future. Gravity Group focuses on the value investment philosophy of Warren Buffet, Peter Lynch, and Mohnish Pabrai while shunning the philosophy of Jim Cramer and Cathie Woods.
Gravity Group welcomes all skill levels and all types of investors and traders. Many clubs on campus have rigorous application processes, monetary and time commitments, or are simply inflexible to Berkeley's academic coursework. Gravity Group seeks to mediate all those issues by being a low-commitment and accessible club with an emphasis on making investing more than crunching numbers on an Excel sheet.
