Future Advancers of Science and Technology - 2023-24
SCIENCES - ENGINEERING
Connecting graduate-level scientists, engineers, and artists with high school students to tackle big problems and create amazing projects. Expanding possibilities for students from disenfranchised or under-resourced communities to shape the future.
To connect graduate level STEAM researchers with under-resourced or underserved local high school students to mentor the students through a year long research project. In early fall, mentees will be recruited through a “pitch day” at their school where the program will be promoted through demonstrations of unknowns in science. Then, in late fall, mentors will guide recruits through brainstorming sessions to help the recruits decide on a question they want to explore. In winter and spring, students get to perform experiments to try and answer their questions. Additionally, workshops will be held to help students with career development, including applying to college. Students will also be encouraged to participate in local science fairs. At the end of the year, all FAST participants will present their work at a symposium where they will hear from professors, talk with college recruiters, earn student-nominated awards, and have the opportunity to win a scholarship.
This guided but student-driven research experience has several goals:
To help students build confidence, especially with research and presentation skills
To encourage students from all backgrounds to pursue education and careers in research fields
To enhance the high school STEAM educational experience
To prepare students for competitive jobs and college applications through skill and resume building
