MESSAGE OF LOVE FROM THE CAL INTERFAITH COUNCIL:
We are clergy and faith leaders on and around the UC Berkeley campus and are members of the Cal Interfaith Council. We acknowledge that in this time of deep political division, the Cal campus is experiencing a heightened sense of turmoil and distress, particularly around a series of provocative high profile political speakers/events and a wide range of responses by members of the Cal community and beyond.
Our spiritual and theological traditions offer deep wisdom for turbulent times like the ones we are now experiencing. When our national climate sensationalizes division and violence, scapegoats and stigmatizes the vulnerable and disenfranchised, and gives a platform to hate, we are committed to embodying this wisdom here in Berkeley to amplify the voices of love, peaceful protest, civic dialogue, and zero tolerance for hate speech. As faith leaders from a variety of traditions and religions, we affirm the value of free speech and exchange of ideas, and honor a long legacy of respectful engagement across differences.
Honoring our differences, and the complexity of the present moment in our city and our country, we stand united in and for love, and we commit to working for a just world for all, starting here on the Cal Campus.
