Cal Seismic Design Team

The Cal Seismic Design Competition Team provides a unique opportunity for UC Berkeley students to learn about earthquake engineering. The group creates a five foot balsa wood structure built to withstand different earthquakes and competes internationally Starting with the design process all the way to the construction phase, members will be utilizing their engineering skills along with other outside resources to perform successfully. Throughout the year, the group will meet to brainstorm ideas for the design, proposals for the overall look, and actual construction of the structure. Since the college does not have specified classes for this emphasis, this group focuses on applying their knowledge and intuition into a competition based team. Competing in the Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition, held by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), is the main focus of this group.
