Big Data at Berkeley

DATA AND COMPUTING - CONSULTING - RESEARCH

Big Data at Berkeley (BDAB), established in 2019, is one of the largest data science student organizations at UC Berkeley, comprising 80 members across three departments (Bootcamp, Online Course and Projects) and three committees (Internal, External, Development). BDAB has a dual purpose to provide data science education to high school students and data science consulting services to clients. Our Bootcamp department holds a seven-week in-person data science course called “Big Data Bootcamp” for high school students at UC Berkeley twice a year during Fall and Spring semesters. To date, we have taught 600+ students over 8 bootcamps. Our Online Course department recently launched (in Spring 2023) a free, self-paced data science online course called “Data Science Demystified” for high school students to make data science accessible to everyone. The course features 120+ minutes of video content, 12 lesson and assignment notebooks, and 8 modules. It covers an Introduction to Data Science, Python, NumPy, Pandas, Data Visualizations, the Data Science Life Cycle, an Introduction to Machine Learning, Statistics in Data Science, and SQL. Our course is accessible to all via our website at <a href="https://bd.berkeley.edu/online_course/intro/">bd.berkeley.edu</a>. Our Projects department provides data science consulting services to 3-4 paying clients each semester. To date, we have consulted for 20+ companies ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies in diverse industries. Our previous clients include American Eagle, Ulta Beauty, Tripadvisor, Hologic and Intuitive Surgical. In addition, BDAB provides professional development opportunities for our members planned by our Development Committee. For example, we hold resume workshops, technical interview workshops and alumni career panels exclusively for our members. We also have an External Committee that plans major data science events open to all members of the UC Berkeley community such as “Breaking into Data Science Research”, where we invite professionals involved in cutting-edge data science research to talk about their work and offer advice to aspiring data practitioners. Furthermore, BDAB provides a social and supportive community for our members. We have an Internal Committee that plans fun social events exclusively for our members such as a weekend retreat, an end-of-semester banquet and social mixers with other student organizations.
